Aging without injury is important to quality of life. Injuries many times cause stress and disrupt the everyday activities. According to AARP (2023), every year, about 36 million falls are reported among people over 65, about 3 million of whom wind up in the emergency room.

Here are a few keys for assisting you to continue to age without injury.

Key #1:

Keep your home clutter free. Reduce the amount of items in your direct path that are taking up your space so you can move about freely.

Key #2:

Ditch the rugs. Rugs among other excess items on the floor, make for uneven surfaces at times. Even the slightest change in grade or surface can increase the probability that a fall may occur.

Key #3:

Work on your balance. Reflexes naturally become slower as we age. If you stumble, good balance can help you regain your footing and possible prevent an injury.

Key #4:

Make your home safer. Make sure that you have adequate lighting in your home. Grab bars and handrails can also be a tremendous benefit to your home environment.
